{"id":4687,"date":"2022-02-03T16:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/?page_id=4687"},"modified":"2025-03-24T14:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T13:49:12","slug":"battery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/en\/battery\/","title":{"rendered":"Battery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a class=\"bouton-bleu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/en\/application\/battery\/\">View battery related products<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>What are the components of the battery?<\/h2>\n<p>A <strong>lithium-ion cell<\/strong> appears as a sandwich comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode (commonly called, respectively, <strong>cathode and anode<\/strong>) and a <strong>separator<\/strong> between the two electrodes.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>electrolyte<\/strong> is an organic liquid medium which allows the circulation of lithium ions between the poles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4696 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Battery-2-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Battery-2-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Battery-2-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Battery-2-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Battery-2-1536x1028.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Battery-2-2048x1371.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>What is the role of the separator inside the battery?<\/h3>\n<p>This electrolyte is held in a microporous membrane, the <strong>separator<\/strong>, which has a dual role.<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, the separator <strong>prevents the electrodes from coming into physical contact<\/strong> with each other, which would generate an internal short circuit.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, it allows the <strong>transfer of lithium ions<\/strong> between the electrodes through the liquid electrolyte.<\/p>\n<h2>Technical challenges for the batteries<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Batteries are facing technical challenges<\/strong> as they are more and more involved in our everyday life. For example in 2021, each French people had used on average 21 batteries or batterie-equipped devices a year.<\/p>\n<p>Among the challenging parameters,<strong> safety is a \u201cmust-have\u201d<\/strong> for obvious reasons. But it is far from being the only one.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the battery must show<strong> higher and higher energy density &amp; power density<\/strong> (energy being packed for a given volume), <strong>be cost effective &amp; durable<\/strong> (high cyclability). The end of life of a battery must also be considered: will it be reusable, what is its <strong>recyclability rate<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"large\">All those technical challenges are the main axes of innovation in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4701 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/shutterstock_533381200-e1643901657556.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/shutterstock_533381200-e1643901657556.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/shutterstock_533381200-e1643901657556-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/shutterstock_533381200-e1643901657556-1024x502.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/shutterstock_533381200-e1643901657556-768x376.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Zoom on the separator<\/h3>\n<p>There are commercial polymer separators existing with sufficient mechanical and electrochemical stability and high porosity.<\/p>\n<p>However, these <strong>polyolefin-type separators suffer from a poor electrolyte affinity<\/strong> due to their hydrophobicity. Moreover, they show <strong>low thermal structure integrity<\/strong> due to their low melting point. Eventually, it leads to an internal short circuit and a thermal runaway.<\/p>\n<p>That is why <strong>new projects are emerging<\/strong>. For example, filling the polyolefin with <strong>thermally stable ceramic particles such as alumina (Al2O3 filler)<\/strong> shows a notorious <strong>reduction in thermal shrinkage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the ceramic coating is an alternative approach. It leads to <strong>\u00ab ceramic-coated separators \u00bb (CCSs)<\/strong> .<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"bouton-bleu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/en\/application\/battery-separator\/\">View battery separator related products<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What do chemical oxides, like HPA, bring to the battery?<\/h2>\n<p>By coating a ceramic slurry composed of ceramic particles and binder onto a polyolefin base film, the <strong>thermal shrinkage of polyolefin can be drastically reduced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the hydrophilic surface property of ceramic particles and the high porosity of CCSs can provide <strong>electrolyte wettability and efficient lithium ions transport<\/strong>, respectively, which improves the electrochemical performance. Furthermore, not only the coating process is viable for mass production, but it is also the most effective way to make separators at low costs and are the most attractive candidate for the development of <strong>safety-enhanced separators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The separator, loaded with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/en\/chemistry\/high-purity-alumina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Al2O3 partic<\/a>l<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/en\/chemistry\/high-purity-alumina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">es<\/a> or coated with an Al2O3 layer, can be likened to a porous network in which the continuous phase will be the electrolyte.<br \/>\nThe Li+ ions will move within this porous network to reach the electrodes of the battery.<br \/>\nThe set [Polymer separator &#8211; Al2O3 particles &#8211; pores] will condition all the desired properties for a separator.<br \/>\nThus, it is reasonable to assume that anything that changes the characteristics of the porous network will affect the properties and functionality of the separator.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4617 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Baikowski-battery-hpa-influence-1024x757.jpg\" alt=\"The influence of HPA in the Li-ion battery\" width=\"1024\" height=\"757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Baikowski-battery-hpa-influence-1024x757.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Baikowski-battery-hpa-influence-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Baikowski-battery-hpa-influence-768x568.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.baikowski.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Baikowski-battery-hpa-influence.jpg 1033w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why using Baikowski products for battery projects?<\/h3>\n<p>We know that <strong>our oxides can influence <\/strong>the above parameters as well as the overall properties of the separator, including <strong>porosity, permeability, high temperature stability &amp; strength<\/strong>.
